The Virtual Dental Home (VDH) is a model for providing dental care in the places where people live, work, play, attend school and receive social services. VDH utilizes the latest technology to link dental professionals in the community with dentists at remote office sites. The ESC! VDH is available at 14 schools (link to PDF of the schools) in the Twin Rivers Unified School District. Dental teams consisting of a registered dental hygienist, dental assistant and care coordinator provide preventive dental care to children at school sites. The onsite team sends x-rays and other information to a designated off-site dentist. If the dentist finds a child needs dental care that cannot be provided at the school site, such as a filling or an extraction, the care coordinator will help the family make a dental appointment. Approximately 2/3 of the children will have all of their dental needs met at the school site while 1/3 will need to be seen by a dentist for additional, non-preventive treatment.

Children enrolled in the VDH will be reappointed for regular cleanings and check-ups at school. They will receive oral health education and gain a better understanding of how to prevent tooth decay. Click here to view VDH sites.
